When we think of the great luminaries of our century – figures that loom like giants over our shared cultural identity – we often compare their influence over diverse populations, their iconic recognition, or their archetypal ideals. But there is another way that one may compare such exemplary individuals as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Excellency Nelson Mandela, or American hero Neil Armstrong: their tartan. Indeed, DC Dalgliesh, the world’s only dedicated, handcrafted tartan mill, has woven textiles for them all. And now they have collaborated with Spey to create our tartan, too.
The Spey tartan is sumptuous in design and craftsmanship, and was brought to fruition by combining the centuries-old techniques and expertise manifested in DC Dalgliesh with the elegantly chic perspective of Spey. Our signature house check was unveiled this holiday season in two hand-woven expressions: a classic silk scarf (pictured) and traditional wool shepherd’s plaid. Each boasts the decadent color mélange of midnight, scarlet, grey, sky, and pearl, which is our calling card.
Of course, we love when things come together ever so well. Not only an excellent gift, the Spey tartan has become a wardrobe staple of the Washington, DC woman who demands a politically neutral scarf (the red and blue are excellently balanced) that can rise to any outfit or occasion. We happen to find it goes best with our fabulous collection of Spey fine pearl jewelry.
Explore the DC Dalgliesh Hall of Fame to discover the tartans woven for many famous and respected faces and brands. Spey is proud to join ranks with the lovely Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge and Countess of Strathearn), fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, and the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Special Forces, who each have created a tartan with DC Dalgliesh. What a perfectly splendid way to wrap oneself this season!
